Radon is a colorless, tasteless, and odorless gas that can cause lung cancer. Radon can be present at dangerous levels inside homes, schools, and other buildings.
Exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, after smoking and the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. Radon-related lung cancers are responsible for an estimated 21,000 deaths annually in the United States.
Studies have shown that 33% of the homes tested in Wyoming have elevated levels of radon. According to the CDC, having the home tested is the only effective way to determine whether there is a risk of exposure to high levels of radon. Environmental Protection Agency’s action level for mitigation is 4.0 pCi/L (picocuries per liter). Any home or building with a radon level at or above 4.0 pCi/L should be fixed (mitigated).
Some parts of Fremont County do have elevated radon levels. The Wyoming Cancer Resource Program is reminding you to check the radon levels in your home. It’s a simple test and will show you if your home has elevated radon levels. Test kits are available at no cost!
