(Riverton, WY) – The Fremont County Library System Board of Trustees voted last week to “abandon” the proposed materials acquisition policy revision it has been working on for months.
The board had put the proposal out for public review in May, but the required 45-day public comment period was interrupted by a technical issue that disabled Fremont County’s email server, so the final vote to approve the policy revision was delayed last month.
Since then, two new trustees have been appointed to the library board: Kristy Richmond and Tiffani Zimmer.
It was Richmond who proposed “indefinitely” postponing any further work on the materials acquisition policy last week, citing the “grave concerns” she has about the current revision.
“It’s not my work,” she said. “And I, in particular, do not feel that the proposed changes clarify or resolve any of the issues that it’s intended (to address).”
Richmond also felt that parts of the proposed revision were “very punitive toward our director,” putting an “undue responsibility on her that is unfair of any public official or any person acting in a public capacity.”
“The proposed revisions will never pass muster, and I don’t think that it’s a fair process for Tiffani (or) for me to pick up where we left off,” she said. “There is already a policy in place that serves its purpose. These are not warranted changes. Therefore, I am proposing that we kill (the proposed revisions).”
The Fremont County Attorney’s Office was asked to provide a legal review of the proposed changes, but their report had not been delivered as of last week’s meeting.
