(Pavillion, WY) – Due to scheduling conflicts, the annual Don Runner Wrestling Tournament had fewer teams than in years past, but it remains the quality small school wrestling tournament in Wyoming.
The Cougar girls came out on top, easily outdistancing the field.
“Wind River is excited to continue the tradition of the Don Runner tournament. We were fortunate enough to get donations from High Plains Power and other businesses to keep the tournament moving forward, Wind River head coach Kyle Hunter said. “Our girls’ team won the Don Runner tournament for a second consecutive year. They will be ready to show off their skills and abilities in future tournaments in Lander and Riverton.”
The Lady Cougars crowned a pair of champions in Lily Hill and Molly Bornhoft.
“ I think we have some girls getting overlooked in the state and they will be ready for the challenges that they will face ahead. Molly Bornhoft was able to win the 115-pound weight division. We decided to bump her up several weight classes to allow her to wrestle this weekend. Several state placers were in the weight class, and she was giving up some weight and she was still able to come out on top,” Hunter said. “Lily Miller is a first-year wrestler but is gaining confidence from week to week. She was able to win the 145-pound weight division.”
On the boys’ side Dubois had a pair of champions in Sammie Cyrus at 113-pounds and Siler Hess at 215.
Wyoming Indian’s Ben Niedo won the 285-pound class and Camron Horn from Wind River won at 144-pounds.
“The boys wrestled better and showed some great strides from the previous weekend. Landon Rhyne had a great match that came down to the wire with Brody Allen last year’s 2A 113-pound state champion. Even though it didn’t go Landon’s way, those are the types of matches we are seeking,” Hunter said. “Camron Horn also was able to piece it together this weekend by winning the 144-pound division.”
