The joke floating through the stands was that they’d bet at 10 to 1 odds that the Eagles would win the game. Well, the Eagles did win. The Fort Washakie Lady Eagles defeated the Lady Eagles of St. Stephen’s 68-51 in an early afternoon game at St. Stephen’s on Saturday.
Fort Washakie had a balanced attack with six girls scoring; St. Stephen’s tallied all 51 points from just two players. Uniek Spoonhunter took care of the ball inside with 25 points on close-range shots. She shot all seven free throw attempts for the Eagles, hitting three.
Arieona Arthur took care of business on the perimeter, hitting eight 3-pointers off her jump shot, quick-release style. She led all scorers with 26 points.
Fort Washakie was led by Hayden Hereford, who scored 25, including a pair of treys. Aleah Wallowingbull joined her in double-figures with 18. Izelee Hereford scored 13, and Turquoize Lonebear tallied nine.
The game was a wide-open mix of swarming defense, fast-paced action, and quick inside moves by Fort Washakie. St. Stephen’s whipped the ball around to Arthur, who had the touch from the perimeter. Five of her eight 3-point shots barely moved the net as they swished through the twine.
The game was an inner-conference matchup, with St. Stephen’s competing in the Class 1-A Northwest and Fort Washakie in the 1-A Southwest.
