(Riverton, WY) – The Thursday evening match between Riverton and West 4-A foe Evanston took on a greater meaning as the Wolverine volleyball team completed their annual Pink Night Fundraiser. The team raised $6020 to help Riverton Middle School paraprofessional Bea Rinker in her battle with cancer.
The fundraiser featured individual donations, an auction for baskets, and donations from Sutherlands, the Red Willow Restaurant, and the Riverton Booster Club.
The Lady Red Devils swept Riverton this year, winning in three straight sets last Friday in Uinta County and doing it again on the Wolverines’ home floor, 25-14, 25-22, 25-21.
Evanston jumped ahead in game one 7-1, prompting a timeout from Riverton head coach Justin Taylor. A kill by Halli Weber slowed the Red Devils at 9-3, but they came back to build a 16-5 lead, prompting a second time out.
Evanston didn’t dominate at the net but patiently volleyed multiple times before finding a spot in the Riverton defense. They maintained a 10-to-11-point advantage to the end of the match.
Riverton played closer in the second two games but couldn’t muster enough consistent scoring opportunities to force a fourth or fifth game.
“I am proud of all the girls and the money they raised for the Rinker family, over $6000,” Coach Taylor shared. “As for the game, Evanston did a good job of tipping and finding the open spot. We did a good job on serve-receive and moving the ball around. Great effort by many kids trying their hardest. We need to become more consistent in many areas.”
Riverton has a final home game next Thursday at 6 pm, hosting Jackson Hole.
