Lady Wolverines Swim Away to the Title in Powell

(Powell, WY) – Riverton dominated the Gene Dozah Invitational in Powell, winning eight of 12 events and sweeping all three relays on the way to the team championship.

The Wolverines scored 417 points to easily outdistance runner-up Buffalo with 271.

Riverton opened the meet winning the 200-yard medley relay. Ellie Coughanour, Carlee Anderson, Ashlyn Jones and TeagAnn Higgs combined for a winning time of 2:06.89.

Coughanour followed with a strong performance in the 200 freestyle, finishing second in 2:15.28. Leah Edwards added a fifth-place finish for Riverton in 2:21.10.

The Wolverines picked up their first individual victory when Luci Pfisterer won the 200 individual medley in 2:24.20. Lily Ormond was second in 2:27.88.

Gracie Heiner and Claire Houtman gave Riverton a 2-3 finish in the 50 freestyle. Heiner touched in 27.38 with Houtman just one-hundredth of a second behind in 27.39.

Riverton’s depth was on full display in the 100-freestyle, where the Wolverines swept the top four places.

Higgs won the event in 58.99 seconds, followed by Heiner in 1:01.12, Kendra Crippen in 1:03.35 and Anderson in 1:04.31.

“We had two more girls qualify for state,” Riverton head coach Gretta Roth said. “Carlee Anderson in her 100 breaststroke and Leah Edwards in her 500 free.”

Pfisterer picked up her second individual victory of the meet in the 500-freestyle, cruising to the win in 5:45.07. Edwards completed a one-two Lady Wolverine finish in a time of 6:16.03.

Houtman, Higgs, Ormond and Pfisterer won the 200-freestyle relay in 1:47.18, more than nine seconds ahead of Buffalo’s 1:56.21. Riverton’s B relay of Sissa Hovander, Crippen, Edwards and Heiner finished third in 2:00.87.

Coughanour returned to win the 100-backstroke in 1:08.03. Riley Roberts gave Riverton another top three finish, taking third in 1:15.96.

Riverton took the top two places again in the 100-breaststroke. Ormond won in 1:16.64, while Anderson was second in 1:19.36. Julie Smith finished fourth in 1:26.43, and Beutler was fifth in 1:28.66.

The Wolverines closed the meet the same way they opened it, with a relay victory.

Houtman, Heiner, Ormond and Pfisterer won the 400-freestyle relay in 3:59.89.

Pfisterer and Ormond each won two individual events, while Higgs and Coughanour added individual victories. Riverton also won the 200 medley, 200 freestyle, and 400 freestyle relays to account for eight victories overall.

The Wolverines’ depth proved just as important as their victories, with multiple Riverton swimmers scoring near the top of nearly every event en route to the 146-point victory over Buffalo.
