10-year-old Baldwin Creek Elementary student Jacob Rudd not only won a state-wide writing contest, but he beat other contestants much older than him.
The National Bighorn Sheep Center partnered with the Wyoming Wild Sheep Foundation to create a youth essay contest for students aged 9-18. The topic was based on the North American model of Wildlife Conservation.
Essays were graded on a standard essay writing rubric.
As first place winner, Rudd was able to choose between several prize options. He elected to take a Lifetime Wyoming game bird, fishing, and small bird license with a conservation stamp, a $681 value.
Another writer, Henry Stueckler, was able to continue the Lander-representation in the contest by taking 3rd place. Stueckler received a lifetime membership to the Wyoming WIld Sheep Foundation, a $500 value for his efforts. Chris Muecke of Powell finished second and won a spot at Camp Bighorn this July, a $500 value.
