(Lander, WY) – The Lander City Council voted to approve the new Popo Agie River Park Subdivision this week, paving the way for the eventual annexation of several adjacent properties, according to city staff.
“This jumpstarts some future activities that we have to do in the Popo Agie River Park,” Assistant Mayor Rajean Strube Fossen said during this week’s council meeting. “Eventually, we are going to have to annex the county portion of that park, and that will probably entail annexing adjacent properties.”
Councilmember Julia Stuble asked when the annexation might take place, and Strube Fossen estimated that “we’re looking at a year or more before it would happen.”
“There’s a lot of things that have to be done, including water and sewer studies, tax studies, law enforcement – any of the city services that are not currently put in on those properties,” she explained.
The residents living in those areas were informed about the plans for annexation several years ago, when the city purchased the park land and “deed-restricted that entire property – both county and city – to be public lands for recreation,” Strube Fossen added, responding to a question from Mayor Missy White.
“In 2022 I sent letters to those adjacent landowners letting them know our intentions to make that a park,” Strube Fossen said. “And at that time we discussed future annexations.”
The subdivision the council approved Tuesday rezones the portions of the park that are already inside city limits from R-3 to public lands, Strube Fossen said.
It also includes “the lands that would be purchased by adjacent land owner” and “notes that, in his mobile home park, he will retain R-3 zoning,” she said.
