The Lander City Council passed an ordinance on first reading Tuesday removing imprisonment as a possible penalty for violating local park rules.
The rules for each park will be posted on the city’s website and at park restroom facilities, according to the ordinance, which City Clerk Rachelle Fontaine read during a public hearing Tuesday.
People who violate the rules may still be charged with a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $75 for the first offense and up to $750 upon subsequent offenses, Fontaine said.
“Stricken out was the old language (allowing) imprisonment for not more than six months, which is proposed to be removed,” she said.
The council will vote on the new ordinance two more times before it takes effect.
