(Lander, WY) – The Lander Community Unity Pig Roast brought in the masses this past weekend, where folks enjoyed close to 3,000 pounds of free pulled pork sandwiches, live music from local bands, and helped raise awareness for suicide prevention/mental health issues.
The day kicked off with the opening ceremony, which consisted of the Lander Pipe Band leading local Boy Scouts for the raising of the Colors, an invocation from Jeff Courtier at the Rock Church, a rendition of the National Anthem sung by Del Kinsowoman, and words from keynote speaker Marisha Van Fleet.
The Lander VFW Post and Auxiliary then led a Quilts of Valor ceremony, where local Veterans David Quick, Libby Littler, and Donald Cook (all NAVY) received the honorary quilts. Lander City Council member and Roast President John Larsen then shared a history of the event, and honored the late, former Lander Mayor Monte Richardson, who started the Roast as a way to bring the community together during divisive times.
After the opening ceremony wrapped up, folks then got to eat the free pulled pork sandwiches that had been slow-smoked in Paul Downy’s smokers the full day leading up to the Roast, checked out the various mental health booths on-site, watched the bags fly at the Fremont County Cornhole tournament (you can see the full results here), dunked loved ones in the dunk tank, and much more.
Throughout the day, attendees also enjoyed music from the Buffalo Bill Band, Steve Gora, Candice and the Madd Doggs, Nightfire, and local rock legends Full Blown Mosey, who closed out the day.
