(Lander, WY) – Lander Police Department Chief Scott Peters has announced his retirement, effective April 18, 2025. Chief Peters joined the City of Lander in May 2021 and has dedicated more than 20 years to active law enforcement, serving in Lander, Riverton, and Thermopolis. His career has included roles such as Patrol Officer, School Resource Officer, Patrol Division Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, Captain, and Chief of Police.
During his tenure with the Lander Police Department, Chief Peters implemented numerous positive changes that enhanced community safety and improved departmental operations. His efforts included restructuring the department to create upward mobility opportunities for patrol officers, fostering retention and career growth within the force. He also prioritized training programs, equipping officers with the skills needed to excel in their roles.
Chief Peters’ leadership extended beyond the department, as evidenced by his active participation and formation of the Fremont County DUI Task Force. His contributions were instrumental in reducing DUI incidents within the region, improving public safety throughout the county.
The City of Lander extends its gratitude to Chief Peters for his fiscal responsibility, strategic leadership, and unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of Lander’s residents.
In addition to his law enforcement career, Chief Peters served as Mayor of Shoshoni from 2011 to 2018, during which he led significant improvements in the town’s budget and management. He also served as Chair of the Fremont County Association of Governments (FCAG) for six years, further showcasing his dedication to public service and governance.
Chief Peters holds a degree in business management and has extensive experience in training law enforcement officers across several western states. His broad expertise in government and public safety has left a lasting impact on the Lander Police Department and the community as a whole.

I am proud of the accomplishments of our department and grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such dedicated professionals. I look forward to continuing to be part of this great community.”

While I’m delighted for Chief Peters to return to his love of golf, and pleased he plans to stay in the Lander community, I will miss his sage advice.”
Following his retirement, Chief Peters will remain in Lander and take on a new role as the golf professional and general manager at the Lander Golf Course.
