(Lander, WY) – The stands in the Bruce Gresly Aquatic Center were packed last Saturday as swim parents, friends, former swimmers, and the general public showed up to get an early-season look at this year’s teams in the pentathlon format event.
More than ninety athletes competed and they did not disappoint, putting together gritty performances even after just two weeks of practice. Lander dominated the podium places for the swimmers, taking seven of the top ten spots.
Lander’s Katy Anderson took top honors with a total time of 4:43.73. Rounding out the top spots were: Vayda Havens (Lander), Summer LaVigne (Cody), Sara Kearns (Lander), Kaitlin Diver (Powell), Emily Plaisted (Lander), Lara Robertson (Lander), Chayse Denton (Lander), Daegan Reinhardt (Lander), and Shae Whitlock (Worland).
In diving, Hanna Walker of Kemmerer took top honors with a score of 332.65. Louella Cornell of Cody took second place.
Overall place in the pentathlon was determined by a swimmer’s cumulative time after five
different swimming events: the 100 Yard Butterfly, 100 Yard Backstroke, 50 Yard Freestyle, 100 Yard Breaststroke, and the 100 Yard Freestyle. Divers competed with 11 dives. Athletes could also earn state qualifying standards in each event, making them eligible for the state championship meet in November.
In individual events, Anderson took first in the 100 Yard Butterfly, 100 Yard Backstroke, and the 100 Yard Freestyle. Lander’s Plaisted took first in the 100 Yard Breaststroke and Kearns took first in the 50 Yard Freestyle.
Saturday’s meet followed the Lander Relay meet held on Friday where swimmers could also
qualify for the state meet. By the end of the weekend, Lander had 11 athletes qualified for state.
The qualifiers were: Katy Anderson, Chayse Denton, Cira Hampton, Vayda Havens, Ruby Johnson, Emma Jones, Sara Kearns, Emily Plaisted, Daegan Reinhardt, Lara Robertson, and Ang Rudd. The coaches and athletes will be working hard to qualify as many of their 30 team members as they can.
Lander’s team is coached by Erik DeClue, with assistants Greg Anderson and Lyndsay Alcaraz (diving).
