(Jackson, WY) – Lander Girls’ Swim and Dive Team traveled to Jackson on Friday for the Adam Denton Memorial Invite that featured 142 athletes from seven schools (including five in the 4A classification) battling it out for top honors over the two-day meet. Lander pulled out the win, scoring 358 points. Laramie placed second with 305 points.
Leading the scoring for Lander were freshmen Vayda Havens and Sara Kearns who earned a first-place finish and a second-place finish in their individual events scoring 29 points each. Havens took first in the 100 Yard Freestyle in 57.10 seconds. Kearns placed first in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 25.59 seconds.
Also scoring points in individual events for Lander were: Iris Woltman, Kimi Salway-One Horn, Ang Rudd, Lara Robertson, Daegan Reinhardt, Emily Plaisted, Emma Jones, Ruby Johnson, Brinlee Heller, Cira Hampton, Ella Giesmann, Adlyn Even, Chayse Denton, Shyrone AnesiSHoyo, and Katy Anderson.
Lander’s relay teams once again dominated, winning all three relay events. Lander’s 200 Yard Freestyle A Relay touched the wall more than seven seconds ahead of the second-place relay from Laramie. Lander’s B relays would have placed third or fourth in two of the events, if a second relay from a school was allowed to score.
The meet was a prelim-final format where the top 18 finishers in each event from Friday swam again on Saturday in finals. Points were awarded to the top 12 finishers in finals. Each team could only have 4 entries in finals, so a few Lander swimmers who placed on Friday were denied a slot in finals due to the strength of the team. In addition, Lander divers only competed on Friday so did not score points. Evanston also only competed on Friday, so did not score.
Head Coach Erik DeClue was extremely pleased with the team effort. “As a whole, the team swam really well and made sure to show up for the relays. For a two-day meet, they did exceptionally well the second day and had a bunch of swim ups.” (A swim-up is where an athlete places higher in finals than they did in prelims.)
Lander also qualified one more swimmer for the state meet, Brinlee Heller, who earned a qualifying time in the 100 Yard Backstroke. A total of 16 Lander athletes have earned the right to wear the green parkas so far this season. Coaches will also be working over the next several weeks to have athletes qualify in more events in order to maximize their flexibility for entries at the state meet in November.
Athletes are now moving into the part of the season where the workouts increase in difficulty as they build strength. During this time bodies are tired and times won’t always be personal bests. But the effort will be worth it as the workouts taper off in difficulty just before the state meet in order to produce the maximum performance. Figuring out the optimal workouts for these athletes is the job of the dedicated coaching staff: Head Coach Erik DeClue and assistants Greg Anderson and Lyndsay Alcaraz.
The team’s next competition is an away meet in Green River on Thursday. You can root them on at the Bruce Gresly Aquatic Center at their homecoming meet on Friday at 4 pm.
