Friday the LVHS Girls Swim and Dive team traveled to Cody for the Terry Bartlett Invitational. Lander outscored five other teams to claim the victory at the meet. Lander scored 389 points to outpace second-place Buffalo at 313.5 points. Cody, Powell, Worland, and Newcastle also competed.
Lander claimed first in seven of the twelve events. Individual event winners for Lander were Vayda Havens (200 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle), Katy Anderson (200 IM and 100 Freestyle), Sara Kearns (100 Fly), and Emily Plaisted (100 Backstroke). Also scoring in individual events for Lander were: Daegan Reinhardt (200 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle), Sara Kearns (200 Freestyle), Liv Ooten (200 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle), Chayse Denton (200 IM and 500 Freestyle), Iris Woltman (200 IM and 500 Freestyle), Cira Hampton (200 IM and 100 Freestyle), Ang Rudd (50 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly), Brinlee Heller (50 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke), Ruby Johnson (50 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke), Brooklyn White (Diving), Adlyn Even (Diving), Lyla Rounds (Diving), Alaina Russell (Diving), Emily Plaisted (100 Butterfly), Kimi Salway-One Horn (100 Butterfly), Isabella Gallo (100 Freestyle), and Eden Kemp (100 Backstroke). At this meet, the first twelve placers in individual events scored points (with a maximum of four scorers per team per event). Individual event scores are combined with relay scores for the total team score.
Two additional swimmers qualified for state with their performances at this meet. Ruby Johnson and Brinlee Heller join 13 of their teammates who will wear the coveted green parkas through the season as they work towards the state meet in November.
Head Coach Erik DeClue has to balance scoring points at in-season meets with giving swimmers opportunities to qualify in multiple events which will give the team the maximum flexibility at the state meet. It seems his strategies worked well in Cody.
Lander divers, under the direction of assistant coach Lindsay Alcaraz, showed off their hard work at this meet. In addition to the two qualifying divers (White and Even), all the other divers made great strides. Lyla Rounds scored a personal best 137.35, while freshman Alaina Russell was right behind at 136.00, and Brianna Else at 124.90. Qualifying scores for six dive meets are 150, so these divers are eyeing that mark. Sophomore Jojo Olssen, a brand new diver, improved her score from last week’s meet by 25 points. It will be exciting to see how many divers Lander can qualify by the end of the season!
The team is in action again on Friday September 12th at home against rival Green River. The action starts at 4:00 pm. The team then travels to Jackson for a dual meet on Saturday.
