(Lander, WY) – The League of Women Voters of Wyoming issued the following press release last week condemning the surrender of Wyoming voters’ private information to the federal government:
The League of Women Voters of Wyoming (League) is alarmed by Wyoming Secretary of State Chuck Gray’s decision to surrender Wyoming citizens’ private voter information to the federal government.
This is an unprecedented effort by our federal government to collect sensitive voter data from the Wyoming state government. Data may include Social Security numbers, portions of Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, birth dates, telephone numbers, tribal identification card numbers, email addresses, and similar information.
The safest way to protect sensitive data is to limit access to it, ensuring only those who absolutely need it can access it. States have private, individual voter rolls for a reason. There was no reason to hand over Wyoming voters’ private information to the federal government.
The League knows that voter privacy is paramount to the integrity of our election system. Secretary Gray’s action undermines public confidence in our election process. Additionally, his actions compromise the diligent work of our county clerks who securely maintain Wyoming voter rolls (W.S. 22-2-113).
The League requests that Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon instruct Attorney General Keith Kautz to examine the authority of the Wyoming Secretary of State, by statute, rule and regulation, and to issue an opinion on Secretary Gray’s actions. Subsequently, an investigation into those actions may be warranted.
After the League’s statement was released, Gray reportedly defended his 2025 decision to share the voter data with the federal government.

On the opening day of the Wyoming Legislature’s 2026 Budget Session, the League will present a petition opposing legislative attempts to impair Wyoming’s strong, open, fair, free, secure, and accessible election system.
The petition demands that the Wyoming Legislature reject unwarranted and unnecessary election bills.
LWV Wyoming President Linda Barton of Lander and other LWV Wyoming State Board Members will be present to explain the League’s campaign on behalf of Wyoming elections and to answer questions.
The press conference is scheduled to occur at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, in Room W52 of the Wyoming State Capitol, on the south end of the Capitol Extension, 200 W. 24th St. in Cheyenne.
Founded in Wyoming in 1965, the League is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, grassroots organization operating at the national, state, and local levels to empower voters by providing information about their government and elections to help them make informed decisions at the polls.
