A proposed bill to end the death penalty in Wyoming has won a legislative committee’s endorsement by a 5-4 vote.
House Bill 145 was advanced from the House Labor, Health and Social Services Committee Wednesday.
According to the Wyoming Tribune Eagle, it is now headed to the Wyoming House for further discussion.
The bill is sponsored by Rep. Jared Olen of Cheyenne who argues that repealing the penalty would save local and state government money, as they would not have to hire staff attorneys and other experts for possible death penalty cases.
The Wyoming Legislature has denied several attempts to repeal the death penalty in previous years.
