(Lander, WY) – A scam call reportedly led to a Lander resident paying $3,900 at a local Bitcoin ATM, according to the Lander Police Department (LPD) call log issued on September 12.
The log call states that a scammer reportedly called a local citizen posing as law enforcement, where they told them they had to pay $3,000 in Bitcoin (the total amount ended up being $3,900), or else they would “be arrested for missing jury duty.”
There were also multiple social media posts shared from locals the same day, that stated that they had similar correspondences with callers posing as the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO).
The scammer called from a private number multiple times, then from a number that appeared as that of the Sheriff’s Office, and even had the resident’s name and address during the call.
The LPD log concludes by reminding residents that law enforcement does not use Bitcoin as a form of payment.
