(Lander, WY) – Lander Girls’ Swim and Dive Team hosted the first meets of the new season on Friday and Saturday at the Bruce Gresly Aquatic Center and put on a very strong showing to a packed house. This year twenty-four girls are part of the team and by the end of the weekend, thirteen have already qualified for the state meet.
The first weekend of the girls’ season always consists of a big pentathlon meet. This year six teams joined Lander at the Bruce Gresly Pentathlon. More than 100 athletes competed at the event. For the pentathlon, swimmers compete in five different individual events: 100 Yard Butterfly, 100 Yard Backstroke, 50 Yard Freestyle, 100 Yard Breaststroke, and 100 Yard Freestyle. Times from all five events ere combined to determine individuals’ overall placings. Divers compete separately, performing up to eleven different dives for judges to score.
Lander swimmers took top places in four of the five swimming events. Senior Katy Anderson of Lander took the lead after the first race, winning the 100 Yard Butterfly by almost six seconds, and would eventually claim the overall top place. Anderson was joined in the overall top ten by five teammates—Vayda Havens (3rd), Emily Plaisted (4th), Chayse Denton (6th), and Sara Kearns (7th). Plaisted won the 100 Breaststroke event. Lander divers also performed well with Brooklyn White (2nd) and Adlyn Even (7th) receiving state-qualifying scores.
Lander state qualifiers from this meet were: Katy Anderson, Chayse Denton, Adlyn Even, Cira Hampton, Vayda Havens, Sara Kearns, Eden Kemp, Liv Ooten, Emily Plaisted, Daegan Reinhardt, Ang Rudd, Brooklyn White, and Iris Woltman. These athletes were only too happy to wrap up in their green swim parkas. Their teammates are working towards the day when they too will earn the right to wear a green parka, which is a tradition reserved for when athletes achieve a qualifying time or score.
Friday at the Lander Relays the girls combined to swim a variety of relay events, including some you won’t see the rest of the season, such as the 200 Butterfly Relay and the 500 Freestyle Relay. Lander entered several relay groups in each of these races to give the athletes a chance to swim with different teammates and have some fun to kick off the season. Jackson took top place at the meet, followed by Riverton, and then Lander.
Head Coach Erik DeClue was pleased. “We had several good swims throughout the meet. The whole team looks amazing in the water, now we just have to get them in shape.” DeClue is assisted by Greg Anderson and diving coach Lyndsay Alcaraz. Lander is the defending 3A State Championship team.
Riverton also had a good first weekend with several qualifiers. Luci Pfisterer, Lily Ormond, Ellie Coughanour all qualified for the 4A state meet with some excellent swims. Pfisterer placed fifth overall.
