Lander Girls’ Swim and Dive Team earned victories at Kelly Walsh and Cheyenne East last week and set a new school record in the process. Friday Lander outscored Jackson and host Kelly Walsh in a triple dual meet. Saturday they followed up with an impressive victory at the Cheyenne East Invite against fourteen other schools, most of which were larger 4A schools. During the Cheyenne meet, the 200 Free Relay Team broke Lander’s school record set in 2022.
In Casper, Lander was led by first-place finishes from Bayda Havens (100 Yard Freestyle), Emily Plaisted (200 Yard IM), Sara Kearns (50 Yard Freestyle and 100 Yard Butterfly), and Lara Robertson (500 Yard Freestyle). Lander also took first in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay featuring Ruby Johnson, Katy Anderson, Daegan Reinhardt, and Shyrone AnesiShoyo and the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay featuring Robertson, Kearns, Johnson, and Havens.
Perhaps the most dramatic race of the meet was the 50 Yard Freestyle where Lander took four of the top five places. The top three places were separated by only 0.57 seconds with Kearns just out-touching teammates Anderson and Havens and Ang Rudd placing fifth.
In Cheyenne, Lander scored 272 points followed by last year’s 3A champs, Green River, at 177 and Laramie with 171 points. Many teams at this meet were missing marching band members who were competing at the state championships in Casper, but the competition was still fierce. Riverton placed 10th with 58 points.
Lander’s Medley Relay of Emma Jones, Emily Plaisted, Katy Anderson, and Daegan Reinhardt took first more than four seconds ahead of Laramie’s A Relay. Lander’s 200 Yard Freestyle Relay of Anderson, Sara Kearns, Lara Robertson, and Vayda Havens swam the race in 1:41.53, breaking the Lander school record by 0.05 seconds and finishing over three seconds ahead of the second place Green River A Relay.
Individually, Vayda Havens continued her stellar weekend taking first in the 200 Yard Freestyle and the 500 Yard Freestyle. Others scoring points were: Katy Anderson, Shyrone AnesiShoyo, Chayse Denton, Cira Hampton, Emma Jones, Sara Kearns, Emily Plaisted, Daegan Reinhardt, Lara Robertson, and Brookly White.
Head coach Erik DeClue was very pleased with everyone’s effort. “The girls are in the hardest part of the season right now. They were exhausted going into the meets on Friday and Saturday. So for them to perform the way they did was amazing. This team is tough and willing to leave it all in the pool every week. I’m really proud of them and how much they’ve grown as a team this year.” DeClue and assistants Greg Anderson and Lyndsay Alcarez have done and amazing job helping everyone on this team work towards their potential this year.
If the girls are performing this well while exhausted, it will be a very exciting next couple of weeks indeed. The Tigers host their Conference meet this Friday and Saturday. The 3A State Championship meet is November 7th and 8th in Cheyenne.
