Martin Underwood saves best for last in shot put

It was a tough year for Class 2-A track teams at the state championships over the long weekend in Casper, but there were a few high spots.

Shoshoni sophomore Prestly Barta was runner-up in the high jump, and teammates, twin sisters, Sawyer and Peyton Arnhold, placed in the sprints and long jump.

Atavia Smith was sixth in the high jump – h/t Randy Tucker

Sawyer was third in the 100 and 200-meter dashes and sixth in the long jump, while Peyton was fourth in the 400.

Wyoming Indian’s Dai’Onna was fourth in the 1600 and 3200-meter runs.

The highlight for the 2-A boys from Fremont County came on Martin Underwood’s final throw in the shot put final.

Underwood entered the finals in sixth place, but on his final throw, he “corked” one as throwers often say of an outstanding throw, narrowly missing the 45-foot mark with a career high of 44-11.

Not a bad way to end your senior year, and it earned him a fourth place in the event.

In the shot ring, most throwers are big kids, well over 6 feet and tipping the scales at over 240 pounds. Underwood is just an average-sized senior, but a strong one, with a quick, smooth approach to the shot.
