This November, Westward Heights is delighted to celebrate Nancy Stone as the Resident of the Month! Nancy’s life is a beautiful mosaic of family, kindness, and unforgettable memories, and we’re excited to share her story.
A Small House, Big Adventures
Nancy grew up in Creve Coeur, Illinois, in a cozy house that she remembers fondly. Though small, it was filled with warmth and love. Nancy recalls sharing a room with her sister until her brother moved out, riding her bike all over town, and enjoying simple adventures that made her childhood special. She attended both Girl Scout and church camps, forming early friendships and a deep connection to her faith.
The Joy of Cooking and Family
Nancy’s first job was babysitting at the tender age of 12, but her favorite role was as a high school cook—a job she held for 10 years. Her happiest memory? Her wedding day on September 23rd, 1962! It was the first day of fall, and instead of traditional flowers, she adorned her cake with fall leaves, a unique touch that still makes her smile.
A Little Trouble and Life Lessons
Nancy’s mischievous side once led her to hang out with friends to sign yearbooks without telling her mom—an innocent adventure that got her into a bit of trouble! Today, her life advice is simple but powerful: Don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s a mantra that has guided her through life with grace and resilience.
A Life Well-Lived
Nancy takes great pride in living as an example to others, always striving to be kind and embody her Christian values. She also embraced an active lifestyle, finding joy in activities like water aerobics, hiking, sightseeing around Wyoming, and camping. Her camping expertise even comes in handy at Westward Heights—she loves sharing tips with Rachel on how to keep the fire going during s’mores night! A passionate reader, Nancy was a favorite patron at the Riverton Branch Library.
Her greatest joy has been becoming a grandmother, and she treasures every moment with her family. After celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, Nancy and her husband Terry moved to Riverton 12 years ago, embracing the welcoming spirit of Wyoming.
Favorite Traditions and Holidays
Thanksgiving holds a special place in Nancy’s heart. She spent the holiday at her brother’s house every year in Illinois, where she was in charge of making the pies—pumpkin, pecan, and mincemeat. Christmas Eve was another cherished tradition, featuring a special supper and opening presents before church. They always woke up to find one gift from Santa on Christmas morning.
A Heart for Service
Nancy’s life has been defined by generosity and creativity. She has made 30-40 quilts for Quilts of Valor, an organization that honors veterans, and even helped present them. At Westward Heights, she continues to spread joy through her crafting, making cards for residents and staff. She also enjoys activities like kickball, cornhole, bingo, shuffleboard, and getting her nails done.
Special Wishes
If granted any wish, Nancy’s hopes are heartfelt: to walk and hike again, to sew as she once did, to avoid dialysis, and for her family to enjoy good health. These wishes reflect her enduring love for life and her unwavering spirit.

Nancy appreciates the exceptional care she receives at Westward Heights, where she’s built strong connections with the compassionate staff and fellow residents. She loves spending time with her daughter Amanda, who lives in Riverton, and staying connected with her son Norman in Illinois. Her husband Terry, her lifelong partner, remains a cherished part of her story. She’s excited to surprise him with this feature!

We know she is getting the exact care she needs and she is happy and more active than she has been in a long time,” says her daughter Amanda. “It’s comforting to know that, even though her situation and needs have changed in recent years, she can still lead a fulfilling and joy-filled life.”
