(Lander, WY) – The October 31 crash reported just outside of Lander last week resulted in one death, according to the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) preliminary report posted on November 4.
The deceased has been identified as 72-year-old Wyoming resident John Henderson.
The crash took place on October 31 around 2:30 PM, on WY 789 near milepost 85.
The report states that a truck was southbound behind another vehicle on WY 789, when a third vehicle merged into the left lane from the center lane at low speeds.
The vehicle in front of the truck swerved to avoid the third vehicle, and the truck also attempted to swerve to avoid it as well.
The truck then impacted the third vehicle with the front passenger side to its rear driver side.
The impact caused the third vehicle to lose control and enter a driver-side leading roll, which rolled onto the cab’s roof.
The third vehicle continued to slide on the roof until it tripped on the edge of the roadway, completed one full roll, and entered a second driver-side leading roll, ultimately completing 1 and 3/4 rolls before coming to rest on the passenger side.
Speed was listed as a possible contributing factor in the report, which also stated that seatbelts were in use.
There have been 85 fatalities reported on Wyoming’s roadways to date in 2024.
