(Fremont County, WY) – A one-vehicle crash occurring on July 2 resulted in one fatality, according to the Wyoming Highway Patrol’s preliminary report posted on July 7.
The deceased has been identified as 54-year-old Wyoming resident Clyde Winchester.
The report states that the crash was reported on July 2, around 6:50 AM, when Winchester was driving a pickup truck on US 287/WY 789 near milepost 78, southeast of Lander.
Winchester was “negotiating a slight left-hand curve in the roadway when, according to a witness, (his truck) made a sudden right-hand steer towards the southbound borrow ditch,” the report states.
Winchester’s truck then “traveled through the southbound borrow ditch for a distance until it vaulted off the side of a steep drainage canal and impacted the opposite side of the canal.”
The report indicates contributing factors to the crash are still “under investigation,” and that no seat belt was in use.
There have been 47 deaths reported on Wyoming’s roadways in 2025.
