A Wyoming law that has not been updated since 1977 is being challenged.
A Laramie lawmaker is proposing a bill that would require individuals to be at least 18 years old before becoming eligible for marriage in Wyoming.
Under current law, the legal age for marriage is 16, but the law allows for a child younger than that to get married if a parent or guardian and a judge agree.
House Minority Whip Charles Pelkey is introducing the bill, titled House Bill 60. The Laramie-based Democrat says a person should be an adult before making the decision to marry, noting that there are many other things a person cannot do until they are 18 or 21.
An Associated Press release says that 68 marriage applications have been filed in Wyoming with people under 18 since 2015.
