(Riverton, WY) – The National Weather Service in Riverton has issued a Red Flag Warning for portions of central and north central Wyoming from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
The warning covers fire weather zones in Natrona, Johnson, Fremont, and Sweetwater counties, including the Upper Wind River Basin/Wind River Basin and the Granite, Green, Ferris, and Rattlesnake mountains.
Forecasters say west winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts as high as 40 to 50 mph, combined with very low humidity of 13 to 16 percent, could lead to erratic fire behavior.
A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions are occurring or expected shortly. The combination of strong wind, low humidity and warm temperatures can quickly increase fire danger.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and use extreme caution with anything that could spark a fire.
