The Lander Legends are young this season, playing in the American Legion B Division as an under 17 team. They’ve tangled with the A League Riverton Raiders once officially and had a couple of scrimmages. They met again in the late game of the Round Robbin portion of the Roy Peck Wooden Bat Tournament on Saturday night with the Raiders taking a 15-5 decision over the Legends in a four-inning game shortened by the 10-run rule.
Lander took a 1-0 lead after their first at bat on a Jacob Bush double that drove in Dane Kramer.
The Raiders tied the game in their portion of the first inning after Jameson Spradlin walked, then stole second and third base. A hard, bouncing ground ball by Beau Anderson to third base drove Spradlin home.
Three plays to shortstop Beau Anderson ended the Legends’ hopes in the second, setting up an offensive onslaught by the Raiders.
Riverton scored nine runs in the bottom of the second on four walks, a pair of Lander errors, a pair of singles, and two doubles.
Spradlin and Paxton Yeates hit singles, with Colter Heikkila driving a double into left center and Ryan Cox ripping a low-flying grounder down the third base line for the other double.
The damage had been done. Lander added a run in the third on a single by Jace Hammond that scored Grady Eagle and three more in the fourth. Douglas Mowrey hit a single and scored on a double by Dayne Young. Young later scored on a passed ball. Cash Chance had Lander’s final run on a Riverton error.
A highlight of the inning came with Raider catcher Brayden Baker throwing out Eagle on an attempted steal of second base.
The Raiders put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Singles by Cox, Lee Maestas, and Baker, along with a double from Addison Trujillo, combined with a pair of walks, fueled the offense.
