(Riverton, WY) – It’s been a few tumultuous years for Riverton Babe Ruth baseball. The incoming board of directors has a couple of goals for the upcoming season, some on the field and some off.
“We just want the kids to play baseball. We want it to get back to recreational play,” League treasurer Brandi Gavin said. “We want to play two games a week, including games with Lander.”
Along with Gavin, Dave Jost serves as president, with Amy Hanson as secretary, Casey Parker as vice president, and Jamie Thompson and Ruby Ramos as board members.
“We have no idea what’s going to happen,” Gavin said.
The numbers in Riverton Babe Ruth have been affected by travel ball and the American Legion C team.
“We just want the kids to play baseball, have fun, play recreational ball, get concessions going again,” Gavin said. “We want to get it like little league has it, the place to be and play a little baseball.”
Players can be involved in both travel ball and Babe Ruth
The tentative schedule is to play two games a week with two to three Riverton teams and teams from Lander.
“We’ll try to schedule as many games a week as we can,” Gavin said. “Plus a Mother’s Day and a Father’s Day tournament.”
Riverton will likely play a couple of other teams outside Lander. Otto, in Big Horn County, is always looking for games and has become a semi-regular opponent in recent years.
“Our goal is to try to be like Little League, with a championship but that’s a challenge,” Gavin said. “We’ll start with two games a week.”
There is a parent meeting on Monday, January 27 at 6:30 pm in the community room at the library.
“We want all kids to play, hopefully 10 to 12 players per team,” Gavin said.
Currently, David Jost and Ted Ray are coaching, but anyone wanting to coach should contact the league.
“We’ve applied to get an Edge Grant and to the Rec Board to get new lights,” Gavin said. “So we can play night games.”
