It was a marathon weekend for the Riverton Babe Ruth team playing in the state tournament in Cheyenne. Riverton went 4-2 on the tournament but finished second to the Cheyenne Mustangs in a tight 6-3 championship game on Sunday.
“Our guys battled. They battled the heat, the hometown crowds, and teams with more experience and depth. They put up 110 runs in four days, made great plays in the field and pitched lights out. They cheered their lungs out and ran their legs off,” Riverton manager David Jost said.
Riverton opened the tournament on Thursday blowing out the Cheyenne Host 2 team 28-8 and added another rollover win their second game with a 27-7 shellacking of Cheyenne Host 1.
Their first loss came to the eventual champion Cheyenne Mustangs 20-7 in a tired effort filled with Riverton errors and less than stellar batting.
Riverton bounced back with another pair of wins, handling Cheyenne Post 2 27-17 in a game that featured 22 Riverton hits.
They avenged their loss to the Cheyenne Mustangs 17-6 behind a blistering 14 hits at the plate. The win set up another game with the Mustangs, this one for the state championship.
Riverton fell 6-3 in a game dominated by Cheyenne Mustang Pitcher who came on in relief and allowed no hits while striking out a dozen Riverton batters.
“In the end they came up four runs short, and none were ready to quit. The parents and coaches are all extremely proud of this team for their resilience, class, and tremendous effort,” Jost said.
