The Riverton City Council has a full staff again after Cory Rota was selected as the new Ward 1 representative Tuesday night.
The vacancy was created after councilman Sean Peterson announced his resignation in early February.
Two other candidates interviewed along with Rota near the conclusion of the regular council meeting. Each candidate was given a question from each councilmember and Mayor Rich Gard.
After the three interviews were completed, Riverton City Council members and the Mayor wrote votes on a piece of paper. City Administrator Tony Tolstedt and Riverton Chief of Police Eric Murphy tallied the votes, and announced Rota as the winner.
Rota told the councilmembers, “I’m a do-er. If something needs to be done I attack it, if the first way of doing it isn’t easy, I can find another way.”
Cory currently works with the Riverton Parks Committee, Big Brother’s Big Sisters of Fremont County, and attends many community events and charity fundraisers. He often donates his time and services with his small business, All Around Entertainment, at various events.
He also works for the United States Postal Service, delivering mail in Riverton. Previously he worked at Kusel’s Furniture & Appliance in Riverton. He graduated from Riverton High School and attended Central Wyoming College.
Rota told the council he hopes to help combat Riverton’s issues with alcoholism and substance abuse, make Riverton a more desirable place altogether, and work closely with the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes.
Cory registered and ran for the Ward 1 council spot in November 2018, losing by a 386-350 vote total to current councilman Kyle Larsen.
