(Riverton, WY) – The Riverton City Council has adopted Resolution No. 1559, restricting the use of consumer-grade fireworks within the City of Riverton on July 4, 2026, while authorizing their use at a single designated location under the direction of the Riverton Fire Department.
The action comes in response to ongoing drought conditions and elevated fire danger throughout the region. Earlier this month, the Fremont County Board of County Commissioners prohibited the use of consumer fireworks in unincorporated areas of the county. Recognizing the increased wildfire risk while also acknowledging the importance of Independence Day traditions, the City Council adopted a modified restriction for Riverton.
Under the resolution, the discharge of consumer fireworks is prohibited throughout the City of Riverton on July 4, except at locations designated by the Riverton Fire Chief within the Honeycutt Softball and Saban Baseball Complex adjacent to Smith Road. Class C consumer fireworks may be used in the designated area between 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.
Mayor Tim Hancock said the Council worked to strike a balance between celebrating the nation’s historic milestone and protecting the community during an exceptionally dry fire season.
“This year marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and we recognize that fireworks are an important part of how many families celebrate our nation’s independence,” said Mayor Tim Hancock. “The Council spent considerable time discussing how to honor that tradition while recognizing the very real fire danger our community is facing. Rather than imposing a complete ban within the city, we chose to provide a designated location where residents can safely celebrate together under conditions established by the Fire Department. Our goal is to preserve the spirit of the holiday while reducing the risk of a wildfire that could threaten homes, businesses, or lives.”
Riverton Fire Chief Jesse Cassity highlighted the importance of celebrating responsibly in light of the unique conditions facing the fire department this year.
“The drought conditions we are experiencing are severe and should not be taken lightly,” said Fire Chief Jesse Cassity. “Even a small spark can quickly ignite dry vegetation and spread beyond our ability to contain it. We ask each resident to do their part to celebrate responsibly.”
Residents planning to use consumer fireworks are asked to use only the designated area identified by the Riverton Fire Department and to follow any instructions provided by public safety personnel on site. Fireworks remain prohibited throughout all other areas of the city on July 4.
The City of Riverton appreciates the public’s cooperation and encourages everyone to celebrate safely while helping protect the community during this period of elevated fire danger.
All persons discharging fireworks in the designated area shall be responsible for the cleanup and removal of any and all trash or debris caused or left by their fireworks.
