(Riverton, WY) – Riverton Mayor Tim Hancock issued two proclamations this month recognizing the contributions of public works employees and building code officials.
The first proclamation designated May 18-24 as National Public Works Week, which will be celebrated locally with an equipment display from noon to 3 p.m. Friday, May 23 in the parking lot at Riverton City Hall, 816 N. Federal Blvd. in Riverton.
“This free, hands-on event is a great opportunity for kids and families to explore our city’s heavy trucks and equipment up close,” the event description states. “Meet the amazing public works team and learn how they help keep Riverton safe, clean and vibrant!”
The Public Works Week proclamation says “it is in the public interest for the citizens, civic leaders and children in Riverton, Wyoming, to gain knowledge of and maintain an ongoing interest and understanding of the importance of public works and public works programs in their respective communities.”
“Public works professionals focus on infrastructure, facilities, and services that are of vital importance to sustainable and resilient communities and to public health, high quality of life, and well-being,” the proclamation states. “These infrastructure, facilities, and services could not be provided without the dedicated efforts of public works professionals, who are engineers, managers, and employees at all levels of government and the private sector, who are responsible for rebuilding, improving, and protecting our nation’s transportation, water supply, water treatment and solid waste systems, public buildings, and other structures and facilities essential for our citizens.”
After reading the proclamation, Hancock expressed his own appreciation for “all that our public works employees do.”
“I see them out all the time,” he said. “They’re busy – especially this time of year. So, (I) just want to make sure they understand that we recognize and appreciate them.”
Building Safety Month
Hancock also issued a proclamation last week designating May as Building Safety Month in Riverton.
The proclamation emphasizes Riverton’s commitment to “recognizing that our growth and strength depends on the safety and essential role our homes, buildings and infrastructure play – both in everyday life and when disasters strike.”
“Our confidence in the resilience of these buildings that make up our community is achieved through the devotion of vigilant guardians – building safety and fire prevention officials, architects, engineers, builders, tradespeople, design professionals, laborers, plumbers and others in the construction industry – who work year-round to ensure the safe construction of buildings,” the proclamation states. “Building Safety Month is sponsored by the International Code Council to remind the public about the critical role of our communities’ largely unknown protectors of public safety – our code officials – who assure us of safe, sustainable and affordable buildings that are essential to our prosperity.”
The proclamation says “Game On!,” the theme for Building Safety Month 2025, “encourages us all to get involved and raise awareness about building safety on a personal, local and global scale.”
“Each year, in observance of Building Safety Month, people all over the world are asked to consider the commitment to improve building safety, resilience and economic investment at home and in the community, and to acknowledge the essential service provided to all of us by local, state, tribal, territorial, and federal building safety and fire prevention departments, in protecting lives and property,” the proclamation states.
Community Development Director Gary Michaud said his department would be posting information on the city’s Facebook page this month “to support all those different points.”
“There’s a lot of good work that goes into making sure our buildings are safe,” Hancock said after reading the proclamation. “I think we definitely have some impressive abilities to make sure that our buildings here look nice and keep us safe.”
