(Riverton, WY) – Riverton Mayor Tim Hancock recently recognized community member Ezra Schooner for demonstrating “the highest ideals of citizenship” during a medical emergency involving a visiting hot air balloon pilot at the 2025 Riverton Rendezvous Balloon Rally.
The pilot – Mark Williams – recently sent a letter to Hancock commending Schooner for stepping in to take care of the balloon equipment after Williams went to the hospital that day.
“(Schooner) just did a lot to be able to make them feel loved, feel taken care of,” Hancock said during a Riverton City Council meeting last week. “It means a lot to the community. I think it meant a lot that you were there when they needed you, and I think to all the balloonists around, it meant a lot to know that they had the help they needed. So I wanted to thank you.”
Schooner’s certificate of recognition, which Hancock read out loud during the meeting, honors his “outstanding character, selflessness, and civic responsibility.”
“Through decisive action and concern for others, you demonstrated the highest ideals of citizenship and brought distinction to our community,” Hancock said. “Your efforts embody the spirit of community and serve as an inspiration to all who have the privilege of calling this city home.”
Hancock added that he feels “privileged to live in a community where we have people from all walks of life who step up as needed and in unlikely circumstances.”
“I think our community is better by having people like you here,” Hancock said. “So, thank you again.”
