Riverton Mayor Rich Gard signed a proclamation Tuesday night at the Riverton City Council meeting declaring May 5th at “Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Day.”
City Councilwoman Rebecca Schatza read the proclamation to a standing-room only crowd at the Tuesday night meeting.
Mayor Gard told those in attendance he hoped the City of Riverton could do anything in their power to help combat some stunning statistics for Native American women. The proclamation reads that Native American women are 2.5 times more likely to experience sexual assault, and that 1 in 3 will be raped in her lifetime.
A number of groups are attempting to combat the issues for indigenous women and girls, including the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center.
