The Riverton Peace Mission is sponsoring a public discussion about community violence and safety this month.
The location for the event is yet to be determined, but organizers said it will take place 6-8:30 p.m. April 28 on the Wind River Reservation.
Wyoming Rep. Andi LeBeau D-Ethete, asked the RPM to sponsor the event in order to facilitate a dialogue about community violence and safety, including responses to death threats; missing and murdered Indigenous people; and police, lateral, and family violence, according to a press release.
“We are in this together!” the press release states. “How can we better support each other to respond to and to stop the violence?”
Wyoming Rep. Karlee Provenza, D-Laramie, is scheduled to speak during the event, sharing her community’s response to the law enforcement shooting of Robbie Ramirez in 2018.
Rosa Salamanca, senior conciliation specialist with the Community Relations Services of the U.S. Department of Justice, will serve as a resource, as will Indigenous organizer Steven Carpenter, the press release states.
Salamanca organized the community dialogues that took place locally after the 2015 shootings at the Center of Hope in Riverton, and Carpenter is planning “Know Your Rights” training events in the coming weeks, the press release said.
