(Riverton, WY) – The Riverton School Board has approved a fee increase for public use of the Riverton Aquatic Center, effective July 1.
The fee adjustment will help reduce operating costs while maintaining community access, according to district staff, who proposed the following increases: Current Fees Increase Proposed Fees Youth $2.00 (5-18) $3.00 $5.00 (4-18) Adult $4.00 (18-59) $3.00 $7.00 (18-59) Senior/Military $2.00 (60+ Senior) $2.00 $4.00 (60+ Senior)
District employees will also have to pay admission to use the pool under the updated fee structure, according to the staff report.
Before the board approved the fee increase this week, Trustee Carl Manning advised his fellow board members to be prepared for negative feedback from the public as a result of the decision.
“This is a big adjustment and needs to be well-advertised and communicated,” he said. “Because … according to a lot of people, (the pool) ‘should have been free all these years.’”
Manning was on the school board when the district first started charging fees for pool use in the 1990s, and he said he was personally “attacked” for the move on two occasions afterward.
“I voted for it then, (and) I’ll vote for it again,” he said. “(But) be aware. … It’s a volatile conversation.”
