(Riverton, WY) – On Tuesday afternoon, March 31, the Riverton Police Department shared that officers were “working to resolve a police matter in the area of Fremont and N 13th St.,” as per a release from the RPD.
RPD Chief Eric Hurtado later confirmed that law enforcement was responding to a residence for a report of a male subject armed with a handgun who had barricaded himself inside the home in relation to a family disturbance. The man was later taken into custody.
Tuesday evening, the RPD shared the following release with additional details on its Facebook page.
“On Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at around 2:20 PM officers of the Riverton Police Department responded to City Park in reference to a report of an assault involving a firearm. Upon further investigation officers of the Riverton Police Department, Sheriff’s Office and Highway Patrol responded to a residence near E Main Street in Riverton, locating the suspect in the back yard. The suspect barricaded himself in a crawl space.
“Residents in the area were temporarily placed in a shelter-in-place. The Riverton Police drone was deployed overhead while officers worked to capture the 26 year-old male suspect. The FCSO K-9 unit was also deployed and after a brief stand-off, the suspect surrendered. No one was injured during the incident. A pistol was recovered at the scene.”
