(Riverton, WY) – Central Wyoming College athletics have been very busy for the past few days, here’s a rundown of how each sport has done.
Central Wyoming College Men’s & Women’s Golf
Central Wyoming College Rustler golf teams kicked off their season last week, with both the men’s and women’s teams showing resilience and significant improvement throughout the two-day tournament in Torrington, WY. The event was a valuable opportunity for both teams to compete on a new course against a variety of opponents.
Women’s Team Fights Back on Day Two
The CWC women’s golf team faced a challenging start on the first day of competition but rebounded with a remarkable 21-stroke improvement on day two. This impressive second-day effort was highlighted by exceptional individual performances. Sophomore Isabell Salas secured a 2nd place finish overall with scores of 81 and 77, while teammate Cheyenne Ward finished in the top five with scores of 89 and 80. The team is focused on continued improvement as they prepare to defend their Region 9 championship title later this season.
Men’s Team Sets School Record with Historic Day Two Performance
The men’s team, after a disappointing first-day team score of 308, rallied with a “win the day” mindset that led to a historic second round. Fueled by sophomore Brodie Dale‘s outstanding round of 66—the third-best individual score in CWC history—the team set a new school record with a single-round score of 283. Although they were unable to overcome the day one deficit, they won the day by 10 strokes, showing great promise for the rest of the season. Four players finished in the top 15, including Kyler Graham (T15, 78/75), Houston Dunn (T12, 82/70), Tyler Ewell (7th, 75/72), and Brodie Dale (3rd, 77/66).
Both teams are set to compete in their home tournament this Thursday and Friday, September 11 & 12 at the Riverton Country Club.
Men’s & Women’s Rodeo
The Central Wyoming College rodeo team had an outstanding weekend, with multiple top finishes at the Chadron State College rodeo from September 5-7. The Rustlers’ strong performance was highlighted by several individual placings.
The team’s success was powered by exceptional individual efforts. In the Bareback Riding event, sophomore Eian Smith secured a solid third-place finish in the overall standings, earning crucial points for the team, and Freshman Jonah Bustad finished eighth in Tie Down Roping.
The women’s team also saw strong competition, with standout performances in multiple events. While no CWC women placed in the top four of barrel racing, they competed fiercely and showed great promise for the rest of the season.
The next rodeo on the schedule will be hosted at the Riverton Fair Grounds on September 19, 20 & 21.
Volleyball
The CWC Volleyball team experienced a challenging series of games at the CSI Tournament in Twin Falls, ID on September 5 & 6. Competing against formidable teams like Salt Lake Community College, Snow College, Utah State Eastern, and College of Southern Idaho, the Rustlers fought hard but ultimately faced defeats in most of their matches.
The tournament opened with tough sets against SLCC where the Rustlers fell in three straight sets with scores of 17-25, 16-25, and 19-25. Their struggle continued against Snow, losing with set scores of 19-25, 22-25, and 21-25. However, the team showed resilience and nearly turned the tide in their match against USU-E, pushing it to a five-set thriller. Despite winning the first and third sets (25-23, 25-20), they lost the crucial second, fourth (23-25, 16-25), and narrowly the fifth set (14-16). In their final match against CSI, they managed to snatch one set (25-17), but lost the other three (22-25, 14-25, 21-25).
Individual performances were noteworthy with Presley Ryan leading with 15 kills, followed by Nora Rasmussen with 11, and Rachel Workman adding 9. Defensive efforts were led by Lindsey Stewart with 14 blocks and Rachel Workman contributing another 8. On the court, digs were efficiently handled by Cameron Denison, who tallied totals of 25 and 17 in different games, and Kyndal McFadden added another 10. Ensuring a dynamic offense, Ella Svensson and Quincey Mathews delivered exceptional assists, tallying significant numbers across the matches.
Looking forward, the Central Wyoming College Rustlers will aim to bring this competitive experience into their next challenge at the Central Wyoming College Invitational Tournament on September 11, 2025, facing off against Colorado Northwestern Community College.
Men’s Soccer
In a challenging road game on September 6, 2025, the Rustler Men’s Soccer team faced a tough match against the Northwest College Trappers in Powell, WY. The game ended in a 4-1 defeat for the Rustlers against their non-conference opponents. Despite a strong defensive showing in the first half that left the score at 0-0, the Rustlers couldn’t maintain their momentum in the second half.
The match’s turning point came in the second half with a rapid succession of goals from the Trappers. Northwest College opened the scoring at 54′ with a goal by Josh Scroccaro, assisted by Shay Lonergan. This was quickly followed by Jake Coltart scoring at 56′ and 58′, with assists once again from Lonergan and then Georg Wissler. The Rustlers fought back at 61′ with a goal from Louis Manhood, assisted by Louis Loizou from a corner kick, breaking the opponents’ streak and marking the team’s only goal. However, the Trappers sealed their victory with another goal by Jake Coltart at 73′, assisted by Mateo De Souza.
Despite the loss, the Rustlers showcased strong moments that they will look to build upon for their upcoming fixtures against Trinidad State College on September 12.
Women’s Soccer
In a competitive conference soccer showdown on September 6, the Central Wyoming College Rustlers faced off against the Western Wyoming Community College Mustangs in Rock Springs, WY. Despite a hard-fought match, the Rustlers could not secure a win, closing the game with a 2-0 loss to the Mustangs.
The first half of the match was a defensively robust performance from both sides, yielding a 0-0 draw at halftime. CWC’s goalkeeper, Madilyn Shillig, was instrumental in keeping the scoreline even with several critical saves. The tension and strategy were palpable as both teams searched for opportunities to break the deadlock.
The second half saw a shift in momentum when Kaitlyn Anderson of WWCC broke through the Rustlers’ defensive line to score the first goal of the match at the 70th minute, assisted by Ellie Jensen. The Mustangs reinforced their lead further when Kaydence Barber scored another goal at the 84th minute, with an assist from Makaydi Jenks, cementing the victory for WWCC. The Rustler’s defense faced challenges as they tried to overturn the deficit in the later stages of the match.
The Rustler’s will continue conference play at Trinidad State College on September 12.
Cross Country
The Rustler Cross Country team ran in Spearfish, SD this weekend at the Gage McSpadden Cross Country Invitational, hosted by Black Hills State University. The teams in attendance were Black Hills State, Rocky Mountain, MSU Billings, Chadron, South Dakota Mines, and Charlton. CWC took 5 runners; 3 Men and 2 Women, all of which were freshmen. The Men’s team ran a 6K course and the Women ran a 4K. Overall it was a great starting point for the season, and the Rustlers are looking ahead to their next competition on Saturday, September 13 at Colorado Mountain College.
