Central Wyoming College Volleyball
The Central Wyoming College volleyball team traveled to Powell, Wyoming this past week to compete in the Trapper Invitational hosted by Northwest College. The Rustlers played teams from Montana and Colorado in the tournament that spanned over three days; Thursday, September 12 to Saturday, September 14.
Dawson College out of Glendive, Montana was the first and only opponent on Thursday. The Lady Rustlers made quick work of the Buccaneers, winning in three sets, 25-14, 25-12 and 25-18. Presley Ryan had an outstanding match for the Rustlers, as she led the team with 10 kills and 11 digs. Ryan was a technician offensively as well, serving two aces and recording only one hitting error.
When Friday rolled around, Central Wyoming College found themselves matched up against the junior varsity team from Rocky Mountain College, an NAIA school in Billings, Montana. The Battlin’ Bears proved to be stiff competition, keeping each set closer in points than Thursday’s match. Middle blocker Laina Whitney, and outside hitters Presley Ryan and Khloe Hobson combined on the frontline to provide a barrage of hits RMC could not find an answer for, as each racked up 15, 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Libero Brooklyn Coats was everywhere and anywhere defensively, providing the Lady Rustlers with 18 digs. Setter Rian McKenzie was a key contributor on both ends of the match, squaring up 17 digs, as well as throwing coals on the flames of the CWC offense with 29 total set assists.
In their final competition of the tournament on Saturday, Central Wyoming College continued their display of dominance by winning their third match in three sets, beating Colorado Northwestern Community College 25-7, 25-15 and 25-11. Princess Spitzenberg led her team at the net with 10 kills and only one attack error. Rian McKenzie and Emmi Weber teamed up to dish out 18 and 13 set assists each. Middle blocker Sarah Meservey was a defensive menace at the net with two blocks and one block assist. Freshman Presley Ryan, who impressively leads the Lady Rustlers with 99 kills this season, pointed out the silver lining when it came to playing the tournament down several key team members. “Even though we had a few of our players out with injuries, we saw it as an opportunity to step up and try new things, which led to a successful outcome for the weekend,” said the freshman.
Men’s & Women’s Soccer
The CWC Women’s Soccer team hosted their first home match of the season Friday, September 13. In this conference bout against Western Wyoming College, the Lady Rustlers came out right away with a strong first half, courtesy of Jersee Clapier and Mia Boll each taking turns netting goals of their own. Aubrey Moyer and Sienna Bodily provided great ball movement back and forth that allowed Clapier to get an open look at the goal. Clapier’s unselfishness then resulted in an assist in the stat sheet, as she found Boll open in the middle of the penalty box with a solid pass for the second goal of the half. Coming out of halftime only a goal behind, the already thinned out Lady Rustler lineup lost two more players to injury, totaling seven players missing from the active roster. This disadvantage, combined with a Western Wyoming College offense that was firing on all cylinders, saw WWC score 3 more goals in the second half, which secured a 6-2 victory for the Mustangs.
The Rustler men’s soccer team took on Northwest College at home in a scrimmage following the conclusion of the women’s game. For the Rustlers, this game provided a great opportunity. It allowed a rotation of almost every player from their massive roster into the game, as well as valuable collegiate game experience for some of the less-experienced athletes on the team. Head Coach Ken DeCook and Assistant Coach Ben Nelson also utilized this exhibition match to test out players in various positions and continue their search for the perfect combination on the field before getting into the heat of Region IX matches. On another positive note, the Rustlers also saw Lucas Guilbaud and Shayden Scott return from extended absences due to injury in this game as well. Northwest College took advantage of this constant rotation of players and goalkeepers, scoring within the first twelve minutes of the match and didn’t allow the Rustlers to find a groove with continued pressure throughout the rest of the game. The final score of the match was 0-3 in favor of Northwest. An opportunity for redemption is on the horizon for the Rustlers in a couple weeks, as they will travel to Northwest’s home field for a Region IX match against the Trappers.
Men’s & Women’s Golf
The men’s and women’s Rustler golf teams took a road trip to Torrington, Wyoming on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 12 & 13 to compete in a Region IX tournament hosted by Eastern Wyoming College. McCook CC, Otero College, Northeastern JC, Lamar CC alongside CWC and Eastern Wyoming all had men’s golf teams competing. On the women’s side, the teams in attendance were Eastern Wyoming, Otero, Northeastern and CWC.
The CWC men’s team had top performances from Tyler Ewell (11th) and Brodie Dale (T12th). Ewell shot seven over par by the end of the 2nd day of the tournament, and Dale finished close behind with nine over par. Supplemental contributions from Brody Hamby (19th), Houston Dunn (T20th), and Brock Owings (T22nd) shot the men’s final overall standing up to second place.
Isabell Salas and Cheyenne Ward of the Lady Rustlers continued their masterclass from the previous week, narrowly missing out on another one-two finish by only a couple of strokes. At the end of the two-day tournament, they found themselves in third and fourth place, respectively. Tegan Halloran (7th) had herself another great showing on the golf course, and the Lady Rustlers finished in third place behind Otero College, which was decided by only one stroke.
