Dear Friend,
I am sure that you are tired of this primary season. I am tired too; from hard work to earn your vote. But we are all also tired of the negativity of our election, of money pouring into Wyoming from out of state polluting our mailboxes with out of context drivel and AI-generated nonsense.
Like you, I’m tired of the politics of hate and disparagement. I look forward to this primary as a chance to reset the direction of the Wyoming Republican Party. I’m with those who are concerned that Party leadership has become narrowly focused on a small set of strong views that don’t represent the breadth of Republican values or the Party’s long-term growth. Too often, Party officials, Party events, and even government meetings are marked by hostility rather than honest debate. Yet I remain convinced that most Wyoming Republicans lean toward the real issues, and value civility and collaboration in service to the state.
Sadly, a vocal minority within Party leadership gives voice to a narrow viewpoint that won’t tolerate disagreement — resorting to censure and RINO-labeling of anyone who dissents.
That pattern played out directly in this race. Wyoming law makes it a misdemeanor for a political party to spend party funds backing one primary candidate over another. Yet statewide and in Fremont County, the central committee vetted and endorsed candidates including my opponent by name, one of eight local primary endorsements it issued this cycle. A small group of party insiders is deciding, before Republican voters – the grassroots – get their say, who the ‘real’ Republican is.
That approach has cost the Party many of the Reagan Republicans who once built its coalition. The party of Lincoln, and of Reagan’s Big Tent, has too often become a party of exclusion. Reagan’s Eleventh Commandment — thou shalt not speak ill of a fellow Republican — has become a relic of the past.
I write to encourage everyone who believes in the Big Tent to join me and get involved — or stay involved — in party politics. It matters now more than ever. Help make this the party of ideas, not intimidation. Run as precinct committeeman or committeewoman (you can still do a strong write-in campaign). Think about running for public office in the next election. Support pragmatic Republican candidates. Help restore civility, and help find real, workable solutions to Wyoming’s challenges.
This primary is, again, a test — here and across the country — of whether we choose division or the Big Tent. I ask for your vote, your attention, your engagement, and your voice.
