(Lander, WY) – Sheriff Ryan Lee thanked the Fremont County Commission this week for supporting the recent purchase of two drug detection dogs for the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office.
The K-9 units have been “very successful” so far this spring, Lee said during his regular report to the Commission this week.
“They’ve been out on the street working day and night,” he said. “One works a night shift and one works a day shift, (and) that’s staggered throughout the week.”
He highlighted one recent incident in particular involving a canine unit that was able to locate 1 pound of methamphetamine and 1,000 fentanyl pills during a traffic stop.
“(That) is a large amount of narcotics being brought into our county,” Lee said. “Those people are currently in jail.”
Statistics
The Fremont County Detention Center currently houses 138 inmates, Lee said this week – including 34 people who were booked in over the past weekend.
The current inmate population includes 95 men and 43 women, Lee said, noting that one additional female is out on home confinement.
“Nobody is housed out of the county, and nobody is at the state hospital as of this morning,” he said.
Thirty-six of the current inmates (24 men and 12 women) have already been sentenced, Lee said, while 91 inmates are awaiting adjudication.
Half of those pre-adjudicated inmates originated out of District Court, Lee said, while 43 percent came out of Riverton Circuit Court, 4 percent came from Riverton Municipal Court, and 1 percent came out of Lander Circuit Court.
Over the last 80 days, Lee said the detention center has booked in 260 prisoners from the Riverton Police Department, plus 221 from the FCSO, 70 from the Lander Police Department, 21 from the Dubois Police Department, 19 from the Wyoming Highway Patrol, three from the Shoshoni Police Department, and two from the U.S. Marshals Service.
Call loads
For the month of April, Lee said the Fremont County Emergency Dispatch Center took 1,124 emergency calls, including 1,011 for law enforcement, 573 for the county ambulance, and 260 for local firefighters.
The FCSO has responded to 2,227 calls for service so far this year, Lee said, and local search and rescue crews have undertaken 21 missions so far this fiscal year – the same amount recorded during the same timeframe last fiscal year.
