After hearing feedback from local residents, Shoshoni is planning a “town cleanup” week in May.
“A lot of people have been asking about it,” public works director Bud Boyle said. “It’s been a big gripe.”
Shoshoni used to have a brush pile south of town where people could regularly dispose of yard waste. But the operation was shut down last year due to environmental health concerns.
“It got so large, and it wasn’t really monitored,” town clerk Chris Konija said. “The DEQ said we couldn’t do that anymore in that manner.”
The designated town cleanup week will allow residents to dispose of their yard waste “in a way that doesn’t compromise public safety,” he said.
Shoshoni will accept residential waste May 2-8 at the town yard on East Third Street, which is monitored and fenced.
One section of the yard will be set aside for yard waste, which will be disposed of during the city’s scheduled DEQ burn days.
Metals and electronics will go in a second pile, with a third space for household items like mattresses – all of which will be hauled to the dump on the city’s dime.
“We’re doing this for the betterment of the town,” Konija said. “We’re doing something to address the complaints and the problems, and we have a plan.”
Town employees will help the elderly and others in need of assistance with waste transport during the cleanup week, he added.
Hazardous waste will not be accepted at the town yard.
