(Shoshoni, WY) – The Shoshoni Town Council approved a bid of $493,760 for the Shoshoni Well House SCADA and Electrical Project during a regular meeting Tuesday.
The bid, submitted by Electronic Dynamics Inc., came in approximately $190,000 over budget, prompting discussions on how to cover the additional costs.
Town official Chris Konija explained that the state will cover $215,000 of the town’s match for another grant, freeing up funds to cover the SCADA project overage.
“The state is going to cover $215,000 of our match that we otherwise would have been paying,” Konija said. “So instead of paying that $215,000 to the state and then increasing the budget for a project, they’re going to just pay the town’s match, save us that money, so that we can then use that money for the overage of another grant.”
The overage was attributed to an underestimated electrical cost in the original engineer’s estimate, which was used as the basis for the grant request.
The estimate was made two to three years ago, and costs have increased since then.
“Had that number been properly adjusted, we would only be talking maybe $80,000 instead of $180,000,” Konija said.
Despite the higher-than-expected cost, town officials recommended approving the bid due to the intertwined nature of the SCADA and well house projects.
The buildings are designed specifically for the SCADA system, they explained, making it impractical to back away from either project.
The council voted unanimously to approve the engineer’s recommendation for the successful bidder, Electronic Dynamics Inc., for $493,760.
Officials aim to have the agreement signed by Oct. 1.
