Rising to 6,764 feet above sea-level, Crowheart Butte serves as a Fremont County geographical landmark and a piece of great historic context.
In 1866, a battle took place near the butte between the Crow Indian Tribe and the Shoshone and Bannock Indian Tribes over hunting grounds. The story goes, the butte was named “Crowheart” because the victorious leader of the battle, Chief Washakie displayed a Crow Indian’s heart on his lance at the war after the battle.
The Butte was highlighted Friday by the snow-capped mountains behind it.
