Shoshoni led 3-0 on a Natalie Gilbertson 3-pointer just minutes into the game, but it was not enough. The top-seeded Lady Bulldogs of Sundance roared by the Lady Blue on a 13-2 run to end the period and never looked back in a 52-27 opening round state tournament win at Casper College.
Sundance’s talented guard Jaylin Mills was too much for Shoshoni, she drove, pulled off Euro style step-throughs, and added a pair of 3-pointers, and Shoshoni had no answer.
Mills finished with 21 points to lead all scorers.
Shoshoni has faced a height challenge all season, but these tall girls didn’t just tower over the Lady Blue; they were athletic, quick, and shot the ball well.
A highlight of the game came in the final minutes when Alexis Bacon snagged a rebound and dribbled coast-to-coast for a layup.
These types of plays weren’t very common. Shoshoni had the ball swatted six times by the taller Bulldogs.
Gilbertson paced Shoshoni with 10 points.
The Lady Blue take the court at the Ford Wyoming Center on Friday morning against Big Horn at 9 am.
Sundance advances to a semi-final against Wyoming Indian at 3:30 pm.\
