This month, we celebrate Susan Deveraux, a woman with a heart full of love for her family, a lifetime of adventure, and a green thumb that brightens Westward Heights. From her early days riding horses on a Wyoming ranch to the joy of driving school buses, Susan’s story is one of resilience, independence, and deep devotion.
Growing Up in the Wyoming Countryside
Susan was raised on a sprawling ranch in Cody and Hyattville, Wyoming, where she spent much of her childhood following her father on horseback. Riding bareback became second nature, and her love for horses never faded. Her first horse, Queeny, was her loyal companion in her younger years, followed later by Blazer. Those early days in Wyoming’s wide-open spaces gave her a love for adventure and the outdoors that stayed with her throughout life.
A Life of Hard Work and Independence
Susan’s first job was as a physical therapy aide, but her favorite job was driving a school bus for 9 ½ years. Her favorite route? Squaw Creek and Baldwin Creek in Lander, where she got to know many students and families along the way. She loved the sense of purpose and connection the job gave her.
Cherished Memories and Life’s Lessons
If Susan could revisit any time in her life, it would be 2011-2014, when she moved back to Cody. Those years represented her happiest time, filled with independence and a deep appreciation for the town she loved.
Christmas is her favorite holiday, and this year, her room was beautifully decorated to celebrate the season. While she misses the thrill of sledding and snow tubing, she certainly doesn’t miss the hassle of shoveling snow!
Susan’s best life advice? Be careful who you marry. Wise words from a woman who values love, family, and making the right choices in life.
A Legacy of Love
Though her two children are no longer living, Susan is most proud of having them and cherishes their memory every day. She hopes to be remembered as someone who dearly loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren even go on special searches just to find her favorite candy—Sugar Babies!
Susan also has fond memories of traveling with her father-in-law to Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and SeaWorld—experiences that brought fun and adventure to her life.
Finding Joy in the Present
These days, Susan finds happiness in simple pleasures. She loves reading and has a special passion for plants, taking care of many in her room and throughout Westward Heights. Her nurturing touch brings life and greenery to her surroundings, making the space feel warm and inviting.
Above all, the most important thing in Susan’s life is her Christianity. Her faith continues to guide her, providing strength, comfort, and a deep sense of purpose.
And if she had three wishes? Money, money, and more money! A humorous and honest answer from a woman who enjoys the finer things in life.
