I have just finished reading in County 10 the article by Katie Roenigk June 13, 2026, where she reports that the Shoshoni City Council is not going to sign the MOU with the county regarding the ¾ cent tax. I cannot tell you how disappointed I am that the Shoshoni Council is taking this action. It will make passing this needed county tax very difficult. The reason they gave was “I felt” for the most selfish of reasons. How their personal community could benefit the most but it is at the risk of killing the whole tax. Sad.
When I was working on the 1% tax for roads we heard the same argument from the small communities i.e Shoshoni, Hudson and Pavilion. “Why should we vote for a tax where we get very little (as the amount is based on population), with the County, Lander and Riverton getting the lion’s share. At that time Shoshoni would get 1.6% of the generated tax and I suppose it is about the same at this time. Thank God that argument did not hold as the 1% has been a wonderful blessing for the whole County. The ¾ cent tax will be a blessing as well and in my opinion, it is a shame to risk the loss of the whole tax for Shoshoni’s 1.6 percent.
As with any tax the reasons that citizens vote for against it are multiple. I can tell you from experience that anything that clutters the landscape or causes questions of any nature to arise makes it more difficult to pass. For a county tax that will affect us all it must be supported by all especially the elected representatives. Anything that calls this into question damages the effort for us all regardless how well-intentioned.
