On Tuesday evening, the Fremont County League of Women Voters hosted its final three election forums in advance of the August 18th primary. In all, Michelle Escudero and her FCLWV team, with the help of County 10, somehow managed to host eleven truly nonpartisan forums, thus giving the public an excellent opportunity to learn more about the various candidates county-wide.
As moderator, sometimes skillful and sometimes inept (e.g. only one Republican candidate for Sheriff moves forward), I was so absorbed in trying to do a good job that I was never quite able to appreciate the moment. So tonight I took the time to watch one of the forums, all of which can be found online. I randomly selected the forum for House District 54 and Senate District 25.
It was lovely to get to know Lloyd Larsen and Cale Case a bit better. I even laughed occasionally as I watched the video. Understanding their positions on a variety of topics made me a better-equipped voter when I went to the courthouse today to vote. I remain, however, saddened that the other two candidates, Lisa Wilson and Jeff Martin, opted not to participate. I would have genuinely appreciated the chance to hear their positions on the local issues that were discussed.
I remain hopeful that in future election cycles more candidates will recognize the opportunity these forums present, and I would urge anyone who was unable to attend the forums to watch the videos that County 10 worked so hard to put together. County 10 did a fabulous job with the forums, and I am so appreciative of their and the League’s hard work.
