This past weekend I had the pleasure of experiencing one of the best displays of sportsmanship I have experienced in my 33-year career of coaching swimming.
Jackson was in Lander Friday for a triangular meet with Lander and Rawlins. The original plan was for Jackson and Rawlins to swim the meet in Lander and then each get on their bus to drive to Worland for a meet there Saturday morning. However, due to one section of the road being labeled “No Unnecessary Travel” we were forced to stay in Lander for the night.
When Lander’s boys head coach, Shawna Morgan, heard that we were staying there, without hesitation, she said that Lander could host a dual meet between Jackson and Rawlins on Saturday morning. (Lander would have joined us, but they have a full schedule where they already meet the maximum number of allotted competitions in a season.)
Yes, you heard me right, Coach Morgan was offering to host a meet for two stranded teams that her team couldn’t even compete in.
We had officials, workers, and a lifeguard all step up to help host this impromptu meet. In addition, there were a handful of boy swimmers who even showed up to serve as backup timers for the meet. They chose to help us out instead of sleeping in on a Saturday morning. It was heartwarming.
Thank you, Coach Morgan, for the selfless deed, the lack of hesitation, the amazing attitude, but mostly thanks for doing things right.
