Lander’s pool funding issues are out in the open: The pool costs $500,000 per year, the state hamstrung the school district’s options for funding it, and we need to discuss a new facility – as well as what to do if any major repairs crop up. The questions/criticisms are out there – why did the city stop paying? Why hasn’t the district been communicating this more urgently before now?
Recently, school board member Jared Kail asked those at the school board meeting for solutions. As the Lander Swim Club bookkeeper, lap swimmer, and mom of an LVHS swimmer, here are my thoughts:
Community:
- Right now: Get in the Pool! When you can, please pay the admission, bring your family and swim at the pool. Buy an annual pass before the prices go up! Businesses: can you sponsor a swim session for the community this summer? Get a hold of the school district to make it happen.
- Be ready for the long haul – stay informed and get involved with meetings, focus groups, strategic planning, fundraising, and more.
- Donate before July 10 to the Lander Community Foundation’s Challenge for Charities. Please consider directing your donation to The Lander Swim Club as we anticipate a big rent increase.
School Board:
- As you’ve got a year’s worth of pool funding, use this time to build momentum: Consider opening the pool more and examine fee and rent increases closely.
- Provide leadership and vision as you engage with and implement solutions that are put forward.
