Lander’s Girls Swim and Dive Team traveled to Jackson for the Adam Denton Memorial Invite last Friday and Saturday. Six teams competed at the meet and Lander took the top honors, scoring 556 points to Laramie’s second-place finish of 492.
The divers were a big part of that scoring. Four of the scoring divers were Lander team members. Brooklyn White took third followed by teammates Brianna Else (5th), Adlyn Even (6th), and Lyla Rounds (9th).
Sophomore Vayda Havens led the scoring for the swimmers with first place finishes in the 200 and 500 yard freestyle events. Lander’s 200 Yard Medley Relay also took first place with a time of 1:56.51. Those were the only first places that Lander claimed, so it was the hard work of each member of the roster battling for points that earned the team the win. The large number of Lander athletes who were able to reach the finals and score points was due to the effort this team puts into their work. Eighteen different athletes contributed to the scoring.
One example of the hard work paying off for all those on the roster can be seen in the results of senior Kimi Salway-One Horn in the 500 Yard Freestyle. Salway-One Horn cut more than 25 seconds off her entry time in the prelims on Friday and then cut another 8 seconds in the finals on Saturday to earn 5 points for the team.
In the swimming events at this invitational, athletes competed in preliminary rounds on Friday and had to place in the top 18 to compete in the finals on Saturday. Divers performed eight dives on Friday, with top placers performing an additional three dives on Saturday. One relay per team was scored and the top 16 individual finishers earned points with a maximum of four scoring per team. This setup is good preparation for the state meet format athletes will encounter in November.
The Lander team is coached by Erik DeClue with assistants Lindsay Alcaraz and Greg Anderson. The team competes in Green River this Thursday and in Riverton on Friday.
